1955  George Rendell, retired UC Cooperative Extension 4-H farm advisor and administrator, received an Award of Distinction from the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. In 1979, Rendell conceived the UC Master Gardener Program, now a model for programs nationwide.

1956  Robert Washino, M.S., Ph.D. '67, professor emeritus of entomology at UC Davis, received an Award of Distinction from the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences for his contributions to public health and pest management at national and international levels.

1957  Edward Loftus, vice president and director of engineering at Mission Clay Products in Corona, received an Award of Merit and the title of fellow from the American Society for Testing and Materials. The honor is given for service to the society.    Howard Shellhammer, Ph.D. '61, just retired after 40 years with the Department of Biological Sciences at San Jose State University. He is best known for his work on the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse endemic to San Francisco Bay and his research on the fire ecology of giant sequoias.

1958  Cameo Archer (Dorothy Lacsamana), a writer of poetry and fiction, has published a novel, Make Believe. The work is set in the 1930s in the orange groves of Southern California where Archer grew up. Archer lives in Santa Rosa.    Luigi Chiarappa, Ph.D., received an Award of Distinction from the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences for his distinguished career in international agriculture. Chiarappa served in Rome as senior administrator for the Foreign Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.    James Lyons, M.S., Ph.D. '62, professor emeritus of vegetable crops at UC Davis, received an Award of Distinction from the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Lyons is a founding director of the Center for Pest Management.    Jere Wade, M.A. '66, recently retired after 31 years as a professor of theater at California State University, Stanislaus. Wade also served as chair of the CSUS drama department for 23 years. Active in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, he directed several award-winning plays and served as national chair of that organization from 1990 to 1993. Wade received a Kennedy Center medallion for excellence in the arts in 1993. In retirement, Wade plans to travel with his wife, Penny, as well as spend more time with his three sons and their families, including six grandchildren.
